Teaching in the Digital Age
The 21st century is a century of change. Digitalization is spearheading the “sea change” of technological advancement. Instructors of higher education may have
to address this radical change by either espousing it or shunning it. Yet, as Shakespeare’s Ariel reminds her audience in The Tempest: “Nothing of [this age] that doth fade / But doth suffer a sea-change / Into something rich and strange” (1.2.463-65), we should not be pessimistic about the future. Instead, we could integrate new digital technologies with the old but most knowledge-based activities in the teaching scenarios. The remaining questions are how to choose and use different media and technologies in the new teaching context. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Feng Chia University will, thus, hold an
international conference dedicated to the use of new technologies that would surely come to education and the possible implications and even applications that will ensue in the consideration of teaching goals and methods in the new age.
