Message from the Chair

“ No environment can be called the only English-learning environment, and there is definitely more than one path to learning English. ”

Dear Students and Parents,

The graduates of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature since its establishment in 2002 have achieved outstanding results. They have either landed ideal jobs or continued their academic pursuits in fields such as literature, cultural studies, linguistics, TESOL, and translation studies.

We pride ourselves in being “compact and refined, concise and pragmatic”. Teaching in small-scaled classes is our strength, enabling students to develop individual talents. Most of our faculty members obtained their doctoral degrees from internationally renowned universities and are experts in particular professional fields. Not only are they specialized in their own fields, they also have great passion and experience in teaching. They teach in accordance with students’ aptitude to help students achieve their full potential.

After four years of solid training in language and culture, classic literature, second foreign language, Mandarin-English translation and interpretation, students are fully prepared for employment or further academic pursuits.

In addition to comprehensive curriculum design, the Department also provides diverse learning environment:

1. Various language competitions are held on a regular basis, including speech, reciting, English-writing contests, drama performances, etc.
2. Mentorship System: A mentor is assigned to each class to assist individual students with problems ranging from academic to interpersonal issues.
3. The Department’s periodical Mosaic provides students with opportunities to sharpen their writing skills in professional English composition, script-writing, and news reporting. The coverage includes—but not limited to—interviews, anecdotes in Feng Chia, book reviews, and topics related to multiculturalism.
4. The Department also organizes workshops for high school students. Workshops such as “English and Mythology in Coffee” and “English Learning Fun” offered students of our Department opportunities to teach in English and to cultivate their leadership skill, teamwork spirit, and the value of serving the community.
5. The annual senior play is the platform through which the senior class demonstrates the learning outcome of past four years in the form of drama performance.
6. Together, the faculty and students join book clubs of literature/TESOL, workshops, seminars, conferences, and symposia.
7. With MOE Scholarships for Excellent Students to Study Abroad and Overseas Internship Training, we send out outstanding students to universities abroad each year to expand the students’ learning experience and consolidate their global mobility.
8. The Department provides a 3+2 Dual Degree Program (3 years for BA, 2 years for MA), allowing students to obtain desirable academic degrees in a shortened schooling period.
9. Besides Spanish and Japanese, which prioritizes the enrollment of students from our department, Feng Chia also offers a wide range of foreign language courses, including French, German, Russian, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, and Malaysian.

Our hope is that people may know that no environment can be called the only English-learning environment, and that there is definitely more than one path to learning good English. Through active learning, you will open the window that shines in the brightest light.

Sincerely,
Dr. Lee Lichiu
Professor and Head, Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Feng Chia University
